The holy righteous Simeon Verkhotursky appeared to Rasputin in a dream and said: "Gregory, go, wander and save people."
Grigory Efimovich Rasputin was born in the Ural village of Pokrovsky in the Tyumen district of the Tobolsk province on January 9, 1869. The next day, in memory of St. Gregory of Nyssa, the baby was baptized with the name Grigory, which means "awake." His parents, Yefim Yakovlevich and Anna Vasilievna, already had four children, but all of them died at an early age. Thus, Grisha Rasputin grew up as the only child in the family. He was of poor health. The games with peers, preferred solitude, and it, in turn, set him up for prayer. Grisha's mom, frightened by his closeness and detachment, tried to push his son towards his peers. But he said the same thing: "I do not need any friends. I have a God "(1).
In addition to the Lord, Grisha was very fond of His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos and often called her in his children's prayers. Once he fell seriously ill, was at death. And so, during a violent fever, Grisha saw a tall, beautiful Wife in a dark monastic vest beside his bed, quietly calming him and promising an early cure. And he suddenly became healthy.
As the daughter of Rasputin Matryona wrote: " Everyone afterwards did not doubt that the Mother of God healed him - so great was the prayerful love of Gregory to the Queen of Heaven " (2).
At the age of fourteen, Gregory began to comprehend the gospel. Unable to read, memorized by heart the evangelical texts that I heard in church services. Later, he recalled that the words of the Holy Scripture made an indelible impression on him. One day, hearing that "the kingdom of God is within you" Grigory rushed to the forest because he had become so deeply aware of these words that something inexplicable began to happen to him. Rasputin later said that it was then, in the forest, in prayer, he felt God. "As soon as he realized this, the peace descended upon him. He saw the light ... He was praying at this moment with such ardor as never before in his life " (3).
Since then, Gregory has shown the gift of foresight. "He could sit next to the stove and suddenly say:" A stranger is coming. " And indeed the stranger knocked on the door in search of work or a piece of bread ... The guests were seated at the table next to them ... Almost every evening in their house the dinner was shared with others "(4). In his youth, Gregory was exposed to the slander from outside. The Lord, as it were, prepared him for humility and patience, so that he could bear with dignity the lies and slander that will fall upon him in the future.
"There were many sorrows for me," recalled Rasputin, "wherever the mistake is made, as if I am, and I have nothing to do with it. In the artels I endured various ridicule. Plowing hard and little sleep, but still in my heart I thought how to find something, how people are saved "(5).
These thoughts were marked by the Blessed Virgin. Rasputin's daughter, Matryona, wrote: "One day my father plowed and suddenly felt that the light in him was always growing. He fell to his knees. Before him was a vision: the image of the Kazan Mother of God. Only when the vision has disappeared, the pain has pierced the father. It turned out that his knees rested on sharp stones, and blood flowed from the cuts directly to the ground "(6).
Since then, he began to visit nearby monasteries. Changed the way of life. He stopped eating meat, abandoned the habit of smoking and drinking wine, and began to pray earnestly. "He dug out a cave in his hut and prayed there for two weeks. After a while I went to wander again. He was ordered by Saint Simeon of Verkhoturye. He appeared to him in a dream and said: "Gregory, go, wander and save people" (7).
And Rasputin went on a pilgrim pilgrimage for 500 miles to the Siberian settlement of Verkhoturye, to bow to the righteous Simeon, who appeared to him, whose relics rest in the Verkhoturye Nikolayevsky Monastery.
In this monastery he found spiritual old men - the monk Hadrian, the founder of the Kirtom monastery and the Schemonah Elijah, who spent the last years of their selfless life. But the elder Makarios of Verkhoturye, who became his spiritual mentor, had a special influence on Rasputin. This elder lived in the forest, in the Oktay skete. Initially, he took obedience in the farm of the Verkhotursky monastery, was a shepherd. And he did not leave a prayer for the Lord. Contemporaries described his prayerful boldness: " When early in the morning he prays with his arms raised, the whole herd of cows dies, listening to his prayer. Then he crosses it with a cross, and the animals go alone to the pasture in the forest. All day they graze in the forest, and in the evening they return to the hermitage, are intact and unharmed " (8).
Elder Macarius of Verkhoturye had the blessed gift of a solitary prayer, taught by Gregory Rasputin. This Ottai prayer book brought up in Rasputin self-abasement, patience of sorrows and constant prayer calling to the Lord. Grigory spent his whole life resorting to his spiritual advice. Elder Macarius was a righteous man, whose blessings the Tsar and the Queen sought in his telegrams. And in 1909 the personal meeting of the Oktay prayer book with the Tsar's family took place, which was arranged by Rasputin through Bishop Feofan (Bystrov). In the diary of the eldest daughter of Princess Tatiana it is said: "I was terribly glad to see Father Makarii, the lord of Theophanes and Gregory" (9).
In the Verkhoturye Nicholas Monastery, near which the elder Makarios fought, Rasputin lived a whole year as a novice. While in fasting and prayers at the relics of the righteous Simeon of Verkhoturye, Rasputin was healed of insomnia that tormented him. Righteous Simeon, who blessed Gregory for the pilgrimage, became his beloved saint and patron. It is his icon that he will present at the meeting with the Tsar-Martyr Nicholas II.
Gregory did not leave his care and the Mother of God. So during the next pilgrimage "on the way to one house, he met the miraculous icon of the Abalakian Mother of God, which the monks wore through the villages. Grigory spent the night in the room where the icon was. At night I woke up and the icon cries, and he hears these words: "Grigory, I cry for the sins of the people: go, wander, cleanse people from their sins and remove their passions from them" (10).
Rasputin, a novice of the Mother of God, continued to wander, and, removing his passions, he found even the ability to cast out demons. So in one of the monasteries he healed the nun Akilina from this heavy spiritual illness. "This nun lived in the Oktay monastery in the Urals, not far from Ekaterinburg. A peasant woman who was born very healthy by nature, she suddenly began to suffer seizures, which became very intense and became periodic. In front of her frightened sisters, she writhed in convulsions, then fell into an ecstaticly delusional state, she experienced extraordinary sensations; she was considered demon possessed. During such a seizure, Rasputin appeared. He then walked a wanderer through the Urals. One evening he asked to spend the night in the Oktay monastery.
"He was received as a messenger of Providence, and immediately led to the demoniac, who was fighting in a fit. He remained alone with her, and in a few minutes healed her with a powerful spell " (11).
Grigory Rasputin, remembering the order of the Mother of God and the righteous Simeon Verkhotursky, traveled around many holy places. This, in addition to the Verkhotursky monastery, the Tyumen and Abalak monasteries and the Sediemezerskaya desert, close to its native village, as well as remote shrines - Optina Pustyn and Pochaev Lavra. Later he went on a pilgrimage to Sarov, Novy Afon and to Jerusalem, where he prayed at the sepulcher of the Lord. During the pilgrimage he imposed special posts and, like secret chains, wore the same clothes for six months without washing himself, and, as he himself put it, "without laying hands on the body." It was his peculiar selfless work.
Were worn by the pilgrim Grigory and real verigi. As he himself recalled: "I was still learning how to wear veins for three years" (12). On the asceticism of Gregory, his daughter wrote: "In the most remote monasteries, he walked and barefooted. He ate scantily, often starved, on his arrival in the monasteries fasted and in every way exhausted himself. Quite accurate information says that at that time he wore heavy chains, which left visible scars on his body. He lives with holy fools, blessed, all kinds of God's people, listens to their conversations, delves into the taste of spiritual labors "(13). But when the chains began to call vanity at Rasputin, he left them. He began to pray more.
Wherever he was - whether on earnings, during wandering, on the road or on vacation - he always found time for prayer. As he himself recalled: "Often I went for three days, I ate only a very small amount! On hot days he imposed a post: he did not drink kvas, but worked with a day-laborer ... he worked and ran to rest for prayer. When the horses passed, he prayed. This joy served me for everything and everything ... I also found one joy from the comfort of all; I read the Gospel a little every day, but thought more "(14).
Fasting, prayer, fellowship with the spirit-old elders, cultivated in Gregory the ability of spiritual reasoning.
In the early 1900s, Rasputin, a spiritually mature man, an experienced traveler, as he calls himself. A decade and a half of wandering and spiritual quest turned him into an old man, wise with experience, capable of giving useful spiritual advice. And it attracted people to him. At first, not many peasants from the surrounding villages revered it. Later, the glory of the experienced pilgrim spreads wider. People come to him from afar, he accepts everyone, arranges for the night, listens and gives advice. Rasputin begins to read and write, mastering the Holy Gospel so that he knows it almost by heart, interprets it for everyone. This behavior led to the suspicion of the church authorities and when he was suspected of heresy, an investigation was ordered, which was soon stopped, but then resumed again. Conducted by Bishop Alexis of Tobolsk.
